New build move, Eon problems

Hi everyone, I moved into a new build property in December and have been made aware that my gas and electricity supplier is Eon. However upon trying to register an account with them I was told that they have to get the meters appropriately registered (or something to that effect) which should take a few weeks. I've been living in my new home for 3 months now and have tried to get in touch with them around 4-5 times since moving in and have been told to wait a few more weeks every time. The most recent contact I had was to get in touch with the 'new connections team' and I have not had a response from them in nearly a week. I have no idea how long this meter registration is going to take and I clearly no-one I've spoken to at Eon does either.

As I am unable to set up an account to pay my bills with Eon, I am also unable to shop around and find myself a good deal with another supplier, meaning this lengthy delay could cost a lot more than I'd like to be spending on my bills. Has anyone experienced something like this before and does anyone know if I'm entitled to compensation or some kind of discount for this inconvenience? It seems very unfair for me to be stuck on what will undoubtedly be a high tariff against my will and through no fault of my own.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

And also to the house building company who are 90% to blame for not registering it which is thier responsibility not eon's. Unless they are a very small developer they would be authorised to install ths meters themselves on behalf of eon and register it. Since it does not make them money should the paperwork disappear they tend not to care and leave the mess for the new home owner. (never updating plot numbers to the right house and street name is also a favourite).
  • Hi again, I just wanted to update you on my problem with Eon. I have still not had any luck with Eon or Redrow in trying to get my gas meter registered with the national database so I can start paying my bills and switch to a cheaper tariff. I'm not really sure what else to do other than wait, as neither company has been particularly helpful in giving me any information or directing me to get this problem sorted any time soon. Eon also advised that I would be better off submitting a formal complaint once the issue has been resolved, that way they can work to give me a partial refund. Despite this, I still have no timeline as to when it'll be sorted.

I'm not really sure what else I can do and by the time I eventually come to pay my bill a lot of money will have been wasted on what is going to likely be one of Eons most expensive tariffs, despite the promise of a partial refund. If anyone can provide additional information to help speed this process along that would be greatly appreciated.

Whilst I have not experienced this myself, If I were in your position then I would search for the cheapest tariff available currently for your address and document (screenshot) the rates and base your consumption costs on these figures.

The beauty of this is that you can base your figures on a provider that you may have decided not to choose (for whatever reason) but can still benefit from their rates.

When it all gets sorted (which it will) you will have concrete evidence of what your energy costs would have been were you able to choose the energy supplier of your choice.

If, when sorted EON pushback against your calculations I'm sure that if it needed to go to the ombudsman they could not really find against you as you have not put yourself in this position through your own negligence.
