Worn car keys

I have an old Fiesta (2004) and gradually the keys have become worn.  One is completely useless an the other is starting to fail too and no longer opens the boot.  It has basic key (not programmed) so nothing complex.  I went into my local Timpsons who couldn't make a copy and said I'd need a code.  I've looked everywhere on documentation but don't have one.  Any suggestions as to what else I can do? Would a specialist car locksmith be able to help and if so how much is this likely to cost?
I should probably think about replacing the car as I've had it for a long time but it's been so reliable that it seems a shame.
Thanks

Very strange that they cannot read a Tibbe key and copy it.  Yes a specialist should be able to do the job.

Thanks Molerat.  That's reassuring - I'll try elsewhere.

  • Any decent auto locksmith should be able to 'read' the lock and obtain the keys cutting code and cut you a replacement key in a few minutes.
Ford Tibbe locks are embarrassingly easy to open. You can buy a tool yourself that opens the lock and gives you the key cutting code. It looks like a spiky hairbrush with a key for a handle.

Ah, the day of worn keys/barrels and any key being able to open almost any car....
Caught a friend of mine out when he got into the wrong red Rover 200.
His key unlocked it, but wasn't able to start it.

I can remember a Yale house key starting my father's 1964 Cortina Estate.

Have a look on Ebay, there are sellers who can supply a key and cut it either with the code or a clear photo of the key shaft.
Just had one from them for my Astra GTC done,100% perfect ,£16 all in.

  • I used a Company in Northern Ireland who were able to cut me a key blade from a photo through ebay. I rang around many local locksmiths and they where all quoting for a new key non of them had any interest in just cutting a blade then i found these guys, www.afautokeys.com give them a call very friendly and hepfull.
