Hi
Given lockdown conditions all the dealers I'm approaching to buy used are saying no test drives, but can't really buy a used car without one? How do I go about replacing my total loss vehicle? I know click and collect etc but that doesn't really work for cheap used does it?

Anyone bought recently?

I bought a car from a dealer on the other side of London. We agreed that on delivery I would take it for a run and if I found any undisclosed issues, I could cancel the purchase. I can't say that it got the thorough check over that it would ideally have had, so it was a bit higher risk than normal, but it worked out OK.
Depending on your needs, I would suggest that buying a cheap stop gap car, which you can't lose too much on may be a way of minimising risk. The car I bought remotely was under 2 grand, so I was risking a lot less than if I'd bought a ten grand car. When I bought it, I thought I might only keep it a year or two, but I like it and I might end up keeping it longer.

As with all products you buy solely online you have a right to cancel within 14 days for a full refund. This gives you the opportunity to inspect and test drive the vehicle an return should it not meet your requirements.

Bear in mind the law states that you can only "handle" goods in the same way you could do in a shop, therefore anything more than a test drive would be classed as excessive and the dealer could then make a reduction to any refund in this instance.
  • Buying a car online sounds crazy. But I think nowadays it's becoming more popular due to all the situation. The customer has a right to refund the purchase. But read all the rights and agreements carefully before buying. Also, before buying a car, don't forget that you can check car history online. There are many different sites as Carfax, Carvertical, Autodna, etc. In this way, you could check if the dealer is telling the truth. My friend recently bought a car online. He was not happy about that purchase, and the car did not live up to his expectations. So, he returned the car without much trouble.
  • The main dealers are giving 14 days to change your mind, but you have to pay. If you can put the amount on your credit card then that will give you further protection.
