We have shutters with an integrated blackout blind behind - great when working nights!

I have some cassetted roller blackout blinds, even on the brightest summer say If I shut the blinds the room just goes black.
I have always had a habbit of shutting the bedroom window and blinds about 5-6pm after my shower when it's still daylight,  since i've got the blackout blinds I have to make sure I turn the bedroom light on before I go to the window, otherwise I'll trip up on something on the way back to the door because it is just 100% pitch black!

In my bedroom I have blackout lined curtains that were already a thick, dark blue material.  They aren't perfect as light leaks around the side, but they are enough even in summer where the dawn comes through one of the windows.  In my spare room I have blackout lined curtains and wooden venetian blinds in the window recess.  In combination they make it dark even, in full daylight.

I don’t want to hi jack this thread, but do these blinds also help with blocking out heat?

In theory they will, but I'm not sure how noticable it would be. I got them fairly early after I moved in so have no real comparison to do.
My previous house had an enormous bedroom window and was awful in summer, but by contrast my new house has a small window (1200mm square roughly) and it is 100% better, I honestly don't struggle to get to sleep at all on the hottest summer nights like i used to do in my old house with a window that was at lest double the size.
so I'd say the size of the window is more important, I've never tried keeping the blinds shut all day to see if they keep the heat out

Ex-night shift worker here! I have blackout roller blinds which fit neatly into the recess of the window and are great. I also have blackout curtains in front for a belt and braces job, but the roller blinds do 95% of the work. The curtains on their own would certainly not be enough to keep the room dark, because there's too much light that gets around the folds in the fabric.
Good luck with the new job :)
