If I get an email from Freecycle, I get the notification sound just as with any other email, although for some reason Freecycle emails are always labelled "promotion".  However, when my wife gets an email from Freecycle, it appears in her inbox, labelled "promotion", but she doesn't get the notification sound!  Can somebody please tell me what we need to do so that both of us get notification sounds with incoming "promotion" emails?
And while I'm at it, what actually determines whether or not an email is a "promotion"/

Have you set up Gmail differently? Sounds like your inbox is set up to view all emails while your wife has separated her inbox into different categories social, promotions etc. Check inbox categories in settings

    Googles AI will determine categories.

Thank you.  Not exactly sure what you mean by that, but as far we can tell, both phones are set up the same.  Although they obviously can't be ... :(

There are many ways to setup gmail. How you do it depends on notifications and where things go.

It is a lot easier to change things on a computer.

Go on gmail on a computer, click on settings cog, then 'more settings' and have a look in there ....

'inbox categories' are in settings.  as others have said you have a lot more settings options via a desktop/laptop

Thank you.  When I go to my Gmail on my laptop, I see that unlike the above, "promotions" are hidden under both of those list headings.  But the more I think about this, the more I realise that we need to check further that the issue is in fact confined to emails from Freecycle.  Next time we get one from there, I'll double-check what the difference in presentation actually is between the two phones.
Stand by for an update later today (hopefully) ...

Nope, when a Freecycle email comes in, it shows in exactly the same way in the inboxes on both our phones.  Every setting seems to be the same on them both, yet while my wife gets the notification sound on other emails, including some labelled "promotion", she still doesn't get it on ones from Freecycle!
I guess we now accept that the situation's due to alien intervention, about which we can do nothing ...

I had this same problem & it drove me mad.
    Thankfully I found the solution.
In the Gmail android app, press the hamburger/three lines in top left for menu.
Then scroll down & press settings.
Now select the email address of the account.
Scroll down to 'manage labels', press that.
Click on promotions (or whatever category you want notifications for)
Make sure label notifications & notify for every message are both on.
    Then it should work.
As to your second point, I have no idea how Google categorises them I'm afraid.
