EDF Gas Charges
I need some advice
EDF have miscalculated my gas bills for almost the last 3 years even though i had a smart meter installed soon after moving in to the property. For months they estimated my gas bill at almost zero consumption then in the last year have added nearly £3000 worth of gas charges to my account. In that time frame they have reduced my monthly bill on several occasions and now when i am moving house have told me i am £2140 in debt to them.
What can i do to rectify this without being saddled with over £2k worth of debt?
I have asked them to contact me by phone to discuss and have told them i will report this to trading standards etc as this is their fault. So far all i have had is an email saying that i need to pay the debt. To say i am furious is an understatement
what are my options here?

Can you show that you contacted EDF with a reading taken from the actual meter? Trading Standards have nothing to do with energy supply or billing. Your first port of call is the supplier’s complaints procedure. After 8 weeks or Deadlock, you can refer the matter to The Energy Ombudsman for arbitration.0

You had readings for this period .You had no gas usage in this period .Or you where not paying for what you where actually using .Three years with low bills and you actually where using a fair amount of gas .0

no because as far as i was aware the smart meter was sending this and i was never asked for a meter reading0

as i say my understanding was the smart meter was sending the readings as the electricity was being sent. I am not complaining that they say i used the gas because i would have, but they didnt charge me for what i was using. for 4 months they charged me 22p a month . My account went from being in credit to all of a sudden "oh you owe us over £2k". I did think my bills were low but we went from paying about £150 a month to £84 per month which coincided with my wife and i separating and her leaving. so didnt really question it as i was only home at weekends.JJ_Egan said:You had readings for this period .You had no gas usage in this period .Or you where not paying for what you where actually using .Three years with low bills and you actually where using a fair amount of gas .0 -
Check what EDF are asking for and that all the details on the bill are correct
Firstly do your own sums and see if that £3000 is right.
When installed that meter will have read 0000.0 (there will be a yellow sticker on it). Read it today (watch out for the decimal point) - multiply the difference by 11.2 to get to kWh and then by say 3p (your unit charge) What does that come to (in £) ?
Give todays (m3) reading to EDF and get a new bill.
£3000 in 3 years is £1000 a year - that's very high and implies 30,000 kWh - that's nearly 3 x average.
Have a second look at your meter and note the serial number - check against you bill.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
