IHT Reference Number Look-up?

IHT436 wants my father's IHT reference number. If we ever had it, it would have been destroyed years ago. He died in 1997 and passed pretty much everything to my mother so no IHT was paid. Is there a database to look up somewhere, or do I have to face the telephonic abyss and call HMRC?

His estate would not have had a IHT reference number at you only get it for estates that pay IHT. I would just write 'none'. You could write in pen immediately underneath that his estate did not pay any IHT.0
