Money Moral Dilemma: Should I tell my great aunt I couldn't cash her cheque?

  • Can't believe I've seen comments like save it! It's bad enough not telling someone there's an issue as they'll probably be wondering why it hasn't been cashed yet, but saving it is probably the most inconsiderate thing you could do (especially if the person may be forgetful and suddenly has an unexpected transaction appear after months).

Just say not to worry but the cheque bounced so thought you should know - job done and she'll be grateful you brought it to her attention.

Reminds me of someone my other half knows who was fed up with sons/daughters never visiting her but expecting money for christmas/birthdays.  She started sending them cheques unsigned.  They soon started visiting her asking her to sign their cheques.

  • I received a small refund cheque from Vodafone, 'typed', but with everything except my name in bold.  I paid it in via my mobile, but the next time I checked my account, the same amount had been debited and I subsequently received a letter from my bank, saying this was because the "Payee not legible" - despite the name being 'typed'.  I subsequently took it in to my nearest branch - along with the letter - and they could see on their system what had happened, so processed it immediately.  I think the main issue is that the mobile phone facility is over sensitive.  I would certainly try paying it in, in person, before going back to your relative about this.
