Embossed Credit Cards at Green Motion

Evening all,
Wanted to know what peoples views were on Embossed credit cards and are their sue today. Are they still required in this day and age? As far as I know carbon impressions are no longer required.
I got caught out the last weekend when Green Motion got me to upgrade from the basic package to the plus package as I could not produce an embossed credit card. Its under their T&Cs, so fair play, I thought I read them thoroughly. Rest of my car rental experience was unremarkable, but I was careful and did go in expecting a problem, so non arose. Additional cost was minimal.
