Building Insurance for a property abroad

I am a UK resident looking to take out a building insurance for my property in Italy occupied by the rest of my family (not a holiday home). Will UK insurance providers insure properties located abroad? I will be grateful for any information. Thanks.

I very much doubt any insurers will understand how things operate in foreign countries. Why are you looking at UK insurers rather than local ones?
  • Thank you for your comment. I'm looking at UK insurers because being a UK resident I was once refused by an international insurer provider with offices in Italy to take out a life insurance in Italy to protect my mortgage for the property I own there.

Somewhat different to insure ones life than a building.

You need to speak to an Italian insurer, I dont see a UK insurer will insure.

A UK resident would be expected to purchase life assurance in the UK as that is where you are resident.   An Italian life assurance company would cover an Italian resident.
That is very different to purchasing home insurance to protect an asset in a different country.  You would buy home insurance in the country the home is based.

  • Thank you. It makes sense. I have contacted insurer providers in Italy and I am now waiting for their reply.

You can get policies through Lloyds which cover properties abroad however I doubt it would be economic to do so. The ones I’ve dealt with were villas damaged during hurricane Dorian on Abaco where they invariably have a local broker.
  • Thank you everyone for your comments.
I have contacted various insurance providers in Italy to take out a building insurance and they all said they require one to be resident in Italy. However, I have found out that some insurance providers in the UK are specialised in properties abroad which are not holiday home, i.e. Ryan's and Intasure.

you may find they would be expensive to what you could get over in Italy
