Insurance sold by the companies which offer COVID protection in their policies usually covers being denied travel due to failing a temperature or PCR test. However, if you forgot to get a test or didn't know you're supposed to get one then you're unlikely to be covered.
The only instance where you might have been covered by insurance if it was your outbound flight and the FCDO had issue an advisory against non-essential travel to Germany between when you booked and when you travelled.
Travel within the EU is usually straight forward and travelling via an EU country doesn't usually change anything. However, unfortunately COVID and now Brexit has resulted in things being less straight forward, so you can't presume you can travel from Turkey to the UK via Germany restriction free, anymore than from Iran to Greece via Iraq, Israel and Turkey.1 -

Thanks for all the factual replies. I didn't expect the condescending ones, but I guess some people are that way inclined. When I went away, there wasn't a requirement for the tests, and yes I understand there was an element of change. I will take on board the reputation that Kiwi appear to have, and hopefully not encounter this kind of situation again. I wasn't looking for any kind of pity, nor was I looking someone to insinuate I was stupid, I was just looking for a bit of knowledge/advice!!0
