Videos playing out of sync after a while

My specs: 128gb ssd 'C', 1tb 'D' hdd, 2tb external hdd. 8gb ram, i7 processor, W10 home. I use VLC and SM players. Usually a stored video on any of the drives will go out of sync about half way through. I then have to use the VLC tool to adjust the sync to ok. I don't have 'enhancements' checked in sound control but just for a second or two the audio will go silent not necessarily when it goes out of sync.

In 'events' there doesn't seem to be anything that is significantly related. This is an example:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54}
 and APPID
{15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402}
 to the user MSI\lauri SID (S-1-5-21-87392228-4075325681-2548776180-1001) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Any ideas?

TIA

    Update sound driver in the first instance.

    I've done that and any other troubleshooting methods you would normally think of.

    These are the audio drivers in device manager.

    Eliminate a few possibilities:
    1) If possible try playing a file that has shown this behaviour on a different pc, or even on a tablet or phone. Does it behave the same way? (No - it's the pc; Yes - it's the file)
    2) Do any files NOT produce this behaviour? Do the ones that DO go out of sync have anything in common - file type, audio stream type, resolution, framerate, etc.? You can get most of this information from VLC, under Tools|Codec information. What is the source of the affected files? - web downloads, YouTube captures, smart phone footage, PVR output etc.?
    3) Is the fault consistent? does it occur at the same point every time you play the file? Does it occur in the same way on both VLC and SM players?
    4) Is the pc doing anything else while you are playing the videos -  auto back up, running other tasks?
    5) If you jump directly to a point in the latter part of a file, is the sound out of sync?
    6) Try a different media player - I'd suggest Daum PotPlayer, which I find to be superior to VLC in most respects. I use a much lower spec. machine than yours for media playback, and VLC can sometimes fail where others succeed. In some areas, VLC is a resource hog, though I would not say the same of SM player (which I have only used on Linux). Among other advantages, with PotPlayer you can instantly adjust sync via hotkeys, using ctrl+, and ctrl+.. All these players have their own codec libraries, so playback may vary between players with the same file.
    7) Do you have any video tools installed on your pc? There are various steps you can try if you have tools such as MKVToolnix (remux the file), AVIDemux (remux using different codecs/file types), Handbrake (transcode the file). These are only relevant if the problem is with the file, rather than with the pc.

    Many thanks for your extensive reply.
    1. I had the same problem on my HP Envy, also with an ssd. The problem doesn't appear on my Blackberry.
    2. Virtually all the videos are MP4 and most of them produce this behaviour.
    3. The problem arrives somewhere in the middle of play but not necessarily at the same time.
    4. There isn't any background process to interrupt the smoothness.
    5. Yes, the delay is still there when jumping to the same spot.
    6. The problem is less using Daum PotPlayer than VLC and SM Player. Although I like the latter because it remembers where you left off even ages later. I can't find any options for hotkeys in Daum PotPlayer. How do you mean 'adjust sync via hotkeys, using ctrl+, and ctrl+'?
    7. Do you mean re-render the files from MP4?
    I did extensive research a few years ago and although I can't quite recall the fixes there was some talk about the ssd missing a beat and being unable to catch up but this went over my head.
