Thanks for all your replies about this. This chair has/had been used a few hours a week for just a few months so I expect it to last longer than that! Also I'd argue that if you can't sit on a chair without experiencing pain/discomfort because the end of metal screws can be felt, it's not fit for purpose and has a design fault.

Anyway, this is a bit academic now as the problem has thankfully been resolved. After I mentioned to the supplier that I would have difficulty completely disassembling the chair for collection and asked them to advise, they changed their stance and offered me credit for a replacement chair. I asked if I could be refunded the credit amount instead as I was hesitant to receive a replacement given the problems I'd had and they have agreed to refund me. Despite the shoddily manufactured chair, the customer service has actually been very good overall.

That's a very good result.  Congratulations.

As I think others have suggested, £100 is not much money to pay for an office chair.  If you use it for working from home, can you get a contribution towards buying another one from your employer?  Or borrow one from work like Aylesbury_Duck?

I would not buy an office chair without trying it out extensively first.

EDIT:  Who was the supplier?  Might as well name-check them if they've been good!
