Speculative Shares Enquiries

Hi, I wondered whether anyone could advise? My Dad died a couple of years ago and left his British Steel Shares to my Mum. Recently she has had someone contact her to enquire into buying the shares. The company they claimed to represent is Thomas McCain Group Inc. She only has a small amount of Shares but we thought it odd she was contacted in this way. Does anyone know whether this would be a scam?

Yeah it's a scam.
Search for "Thomas McCain" on this page: https://conversation.which.co.uk/money/telephone-share-buying-phone-scam-investment/
Also, the Thomas McCain website, apart from being bereft of any details, lists their main office in Harlem, in a residential block.
It's likely your Mum has given up her phone number willingly somewhere which has got her on a target list. If it's a mobile number, perhaps help her change it.1 -
British Steel hasn't existed for a long time. IIRC became Corus in 1999 when it merged with a Dutch steelmaker and then was bought by Tata in 2007.

"...dealings in Corus Shares on the London Stock Exchangewill be suspended. This follows the scheme of arrangement (the "Scheme") relating to the recommended offer for Corus by Tata Steel UK Limited at a price of 608 pence per ordinary share in cash (the "Tata Offer") having been sanctioned by the High Court of Justice in England and Wales (the "Court") at a hearing held on 27 March 2007. The Scheme was approved by the requisite majorities of Corus shareholders at the Court Meeting and the Extraordinary General Meeting, which were held on 7 March 2007."
