I get free NHS eye tests -i go to my local optician - but what if i wanted to use one of the larger retailers - how many free eye tests am i allowed within a specified period? ie 1 year , or from my last eye test (other than NHS "at least once every 2 years")

1 free per 2 years or however else perscribed by your optician. I had an eye test last week and they said if i was to have one in a year i have to wait a full year if i have one in the meantime without reason it will cost.0

You can get another test free if you are having problems. I have just had an eye test even though I was not due one but I had been having problems with headaches/film over eye and didnt have to pay.
If you are not having problems then you'd have to pay though.0 -
The NHS eye tests are every 2 years but if you are diabetic then every year. As said previous if you are having problems then you will not have to pay, but if you go in between and there is no change in your prescription you may be asked to pay. This is how it was when I worked as an optical assistant but almost 2 years since I retired so things may have changed. If you present for an early test the optician will have to put your last test date on your sight test form and also a code to say why you are being tested early. Hope this helps

You are entitled to 1 free test/voucher every 2 years if you are on qualifying benefits, but if you are having problems and your perscription changes (need stronger lenses) then you receive another voucher. If you have an eye test within 2 years and your perscription does not change, then you will be charged.
My daughter (12)is partially sighted/blind and she has eye tests every 3-6 months which she receives free due to her vision. She is only allowed 1 voucher towards glasses once a year though. We have to bring certain proof/letters from hospital doctor for this.
Just to get her glasses thinned enough so they dont fall off her face costs us £80 as she needs such a strong perscription.

glasses can be expensive even with a voucher, my prescription came to £120 and the colour must have drained from my face so the woman said she would drop the anti-glare to save me £40, I then had visions of pink national healths :rotfl:0
