So having sent r40 online I received this letter from HMRC:
rang them and after a long wait explained this was a ppi tax issue and they were welcome to examine my bank account, not something they do the woman said. I should have sent all details.
I advised they could keep the tax as I can't be doing with all this but slightly annoyed they have my tax as follows:

What did you enter on the R40 for taxed interest?
A surprising number of people who post on here seem to have a basic lack of understanding of re PPI refunds and tax reclaims.
A common error seems to be they declare the PPI refund on the R40. PPI refunds are not taxable and do not have tax deducted from them. The statutory interest paid alongside the PPI refund is taxable and does have tax deducted.
If you post details of what you entered on the R40 it should be possible to identify where you have gone wrong. Or if HMRC have got things wrong.0 -
Thanks, that could be my misunderstanding then, feeling not so cheated after all, ha0
