@burlingtonfl6 He's a high earner so paying a fair whack, the difference is definitely a couple hundred quid!

@penguin_ He is paying in accordance with the CMS plan, however my point is that I believe this to be erroneous!

@Alias_Omega Thanks, that' really helpful, and would be even more so if my maths was a bit better! :D

Thanks for such swift replies guys  :)

I've put all the relevant details into their calculator: his salary according to his last P60, the fact that he has two other children in his household, and calculated the amounts for both Band A shared care and no shared care (there was no shared care up until recently when after a two year struggle I finally succeeded in convincing the CMS he wasn't seeing DS, coincidentally enough as soon as the payments went up he was suddenly keen to see him EOW) both of which show similar discrepancies.

Not sure about the PAYE thing, would that make a big difference?

Does he have other children that do not live in his household and he therefore has to pay maintenance to another resident parent ?

Yes, it's all been going through the CMS since the outset, but the amount they've stated he should pay is different from the amount given by their online calculator. I think it's safe to assume he's unlikely to pay the difference out of the goodness of his heart so I want to challenge their calculation but need to know how exactly how it's been reached in order to do so.
Is there a breakdown of how they have calculated it? Is this a recent difference?
Does he work in a sector that would have really struggled due to Covid19? Maybe he has had a pay cut or been furloughed.

@TBagpuss He has a child from his current relationship and a step-daughter, both of whom live with him, my results from the calculator take this into account.

@ZaSa1418 Despite my requests to the CMS I haven't to date received a detailed breakdown of their figures. He is working from home and, as of one of their recent missives, was earning £2632.23 a week, yet is loathe to buy DS a new pair of football boots as, apparently, despite having been furloughed practically throughout and supporting our 18 year old DD with no input from him whatsoever, I "should be able to budget accordingly" Tbf this is what's pushed me over the edge with it all!

Definitely continue to ask the CMS for the breakdown. Do you have an annual review coming up at all ?

I will, but the extent of their incompetence is staggering. The whole saga's been going on for 3 years now!

Annual review's coming up in May. They're currently deducting £57.50 p/m because I was under the mistaken impression that he should continue to pay for DD until she was 18 but it was only while she was in full time education, so for five months he was paying for her when he (legally at least!) shouldn't have been so he requested that money to be refunded to him - he's a proper charmer! I'm not sure how much this amounted to or how long the deduction is set to continue as they insist this can only be examined as part of the review in May!

Yeah they aren't fast. Continue to chase them and then look at their complaints procedures and register a complaint if you get nowhere.

If he's paying a ''fair whack'' I can understand the problem he has with you asking for more for a pair of football boots.

@burlingtonfl6 I guess that's subjective and largely dependant upon whether you're viewing the situation from a payer or payee's perspective. I'd also argue that it's pretty hard to make a fair judgement without any context, but I'm simply here for some guidance as to how the calculations are made rather than for a debate on the ethics of who should be paying what  :|

I'm only going off your description.
I never understand why people think it costs so much to bring up a child after a divorce.
