Aside from ApplePay, GooglePay, and I believe also SamsungPay and GarminPay, there is also TescoPay+ which you can only use at Tesco (incl their petrol stations) and for up to £250. All the others are up to the card limit.

Although all of these charge whichever card you registered with them, you can have great flexibility if you use a Curve card (free version of it). You can then very easily switch the actual card to be charged, even after you made a purchase. You can even pay contactless with card that aren't contactless. The limit on Curve payments is controlled by the underlying card limit as well as a Curve limit which seems very generous (£9,000/day for me).
I suppose that it’s good that for those who really want to pay contactless but surely it’s easier to use the actual non-contactless card and enter your PIN then change the underlying card on Curve (however easy that might be).
It's a great deal easier for me to use Curve. For starters, I do not ever need to actually have any of my other cards on me - they are all safely locked away in my home safe at all times. As I am completely mobile, I don't even take my Curve card out of the house these days. I either pay with my watch, or with my phone. No card needed, and no PIN. Everywhere takes contactless these days, and if I ever get stuck, I can even get cash out of an ATM without a card (although that is not a Curve feature).

Changing the underlying card is a doddle with the Curve app - and if I forget to do that, or if I change my mind after a purchase, I can move the purchase to a different card, within 90 days of the purchase.
We each have our own preferences and neither of us is right or wrong, just different, but I still don’t see the benefit. I have my cards loaded onto Apple Pay but that’s for an emergency rather than every day use. I don’t use that method from one year to the next, primarily because I don’t like the idea of Apple taking a small cut from the transaction. It’s bad enough that I’ve given them many hundreds over the years without my bank/retailer also adding to it.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, I have not said that you are wrong, or that I am right. I have simply reported what I do and said that it's a great deal easier for me to use Curve, with ApplePay. I am also quite happy for Apple to continue to do well, as Apple is one of the companies in the investment fund I have chosen. Although they definitely wouldn't get rich from the payments I make. There are other players who get a lot more from my purchases - and I am equally happy that they are doing well, too.

I'm interested to know how you get cash out without a card?

Obviously, there will have to be a consultation period, and a dig at the EU, saying it's only possible because we left.
That must be a misunderstanding as the Dutch put their limit up to EUR100 in March 2020.

  • There is little value for me to use Curve on an intermediate card that I can directly load onto GPay.
No S75 cover plus potential issues with chargeback and refunds.

£100 contactless limit is madness, IMO.

Curve card is fab as it makes my regular card contactless.

Presumably this all stems from the unproven fear that you can catch Covid from keypads. Contactless is convenient yes, but for larger transactions I far prefer putting the card in and typing the PIN, it is hardly difficult. I would suggest it is reduced to £20! Increasing it to £100 with a cap of £300 before asking for a PIN is crazy.

Fairly sure you'll have similar troubles with S75 using GPay, but I agree that having: "Merchant --> GPay --> Curve --> CC" does seem a bit convoluted and has more steps that could go wrong if you needed to dispute anything.

Perhaps in your opinion its crazy but to many MSE'ers and to me its a great idea, i've been using apple pay for quite a long time and like the fact that its not limited to the current contactless limit. When I was in Australia at the beginning of last year it was great being able to use my Australian bank card for $100 payments without having to enter my pin.  There limit has just gone up to $200 making it even more convenient.
