Do I need an architect for my extension?

Hi all,
I'm in the early stages of looking into a two storey rear extension, I would look to knock down the conservatory and build the extension in the same footprint. I have spoken to a couple of builders for a ballpark figure and they only seem interested if I have drawings.
It's a bit frustrating as I want to know if I can afford it first before getting drawings made up. Anyway, do you think I need an architect or just a company who specialise in planning and building control drawings? Essentially the extension will be rectangle (same as conservatory), the tricky bit is understanding how the right side of the extension will connect with the single storey kitchen. I don't know if a draughtsman would have enough experience of something like this.
Many thanks,
Sam

You will need a designer of some sort, whether that be an architect, technologist or technician. They would need to be proficient in both Planning and Building Regulations.
Of course builders will need drawings in order to price. You have to unfortunately spend a little bit of money upfront to get to that stage. No point discussing anything with builders until you know you’ll get Planning first.
If you’re wanting ball park costings, work on a rate of £2k per sq.m. That’ll be for the shell and not include fixtures or fittings.0
