Prepayment Meter

Hi there,
Looking for some advice.
Last July I bought my first flat which was previously used as a buy-to-let. Due to the rental nature of the property the gas and electric are on a prepayment meter.
I called E-on for the first time in October to get switched over to a direct debit account but failed the credit check. I thought this was odd but I had just taken out a mortgage so assumed this was the issue. Was told I was banned from applying again for 3 months so I phoned back in February - failed the credit check again. Before all this, I had a very good credit rating (which has now plummeted due to the multiple credit checks against my name) so I am confused as to why this is happening.
I'm at a loss with what to do. Has anyone else been in this situation and if so, how did you resolve it?
Thanks,
K
