intermittent foul smell coming from under sink... basically days on end of sewage smell then disappears. After months of investigation turns out toilet stack behind kitchen has no Durgo valve ... open sewage pipe direct into my home.
my home feels contaminated and a health hazard
months of buying candles / leaving doors open to get rid of smell/ my dishwasher empties into this stack and I’m sure the smell back tracked into it. I stopped using it. Food thrown out when it was really bad as it seeped into my cupboards
i feel like my soft furnishings are contaminated.

Any advice re compensation I have had weeks at a time with foul smell in my home when they would not come out over xmas re covid
not deemed an emergency
feel really aggrieved
have no idea how or what I should be seeking in compensation

How much would you like?I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!2

What ever your provable losses are, so costbof candles heating on with doors open etc you might get a small amount of goodwill for the inconvenience.
A bad smell whilst annoying is not an emergency2 -
An Easter egg maybe.0

Add up and provide evidence for your quantifiable losses. Receipts for candles, excess heating when the doors were open, the food you threw out, a new dishwasher, all new carpets, curtains and soft furnishings. Should be several grand there if you can prove they all needed buying or replacing and you have the receipts.Hayley438 said:Moved into new home 4 month ago

It's not an emergency. Not even at Christmas.1 -
If it's a stub stack then it may not need a durgo anyway. The traps/u-bends for the sink, dishwasher, toilet etc should stop sewer smells coming back up - issues with venting can cause these to dry out etc, but could be topped up regularly to deal with until the wider issue is resolved. The durgo just balances pressures so that the traps don't dry out when you flush the toilet etc.
More likely that there's an issue with the plumbing under the sink. The fact that the smell is intermittent would suggest this - it goes away when the traps are wet, and comes back when they dry out. The worst thing you can do is to stop using the appliances/fittings as then the traps don't get refilled.0 -
New soft furnishings? Do you dispose of your sofa every time someone farts on it???
Just quantify your loses e.g. hire a rug doctor thing to clean carpets, steam clean other stuff etc... cost of some candles, additional electricity costs for having door open.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
A good first step would be to rationalise the problem, as right now your post is blown way, way out of proportion.
I'd ask them for a token gesture towards the candles etc, but to imply soft furnishings will smell forever is just nonsense - sorry.0
