Sealing Ronseal fence paint?

Two years ago I painted our back garden fence with Ronseal fence life plus in sage green. That winter it washed off.

I put it down to a lack of coats - I did two, when I should have done 3 for good covering. However last year I painted it again, same colour, but with three coats - and it's mostly all washed off again!

Done a bit of research and apparently this a common problem with this paint when painting over previously painted surfaces. Other fence sections which I painted in Curpinol Seagrass have kept much better.

I know I should have pressure washed the old paint to get the fence back to bare wood, however I've just gone ahead and painted it again with three coats of Ronseal. I was thinking of changing colour however I had 4 pots of sage left from last year, and the rest of the fences are in that seagrass/sage colour.

So my questions is, is there anything I can do to seal the paint? Varnish over it? PVA?

Any suggestions welcomed!

  • Varnish and PVA would probably hinder any adhesion.

Ronseal fence paint only works on bare & rough (sawn) timber. It won't usually even adhere well to planed bare timber.

To now try and overcoat it with a 'sealant' is asking for a sticky messy mess. The 'fence stuff' is a completely different type of coating to 'normal paints', and is designed to shrug off water and dirt - it has a kind of waxy finish. It's also clearly not properly adhered to your fence, so to expect a further coat of sealant to somehow hold it in place is taking a huge risk, even if you could get it to stick to the fence paint.

    PVA? NO!!

Best, I think, wait until it washes off again and then jet-wash to remove any remaining traces, and go for a totally different paint that's guaranteed to stick to old paint, like Bedec Barn Paint. Tho' there are other paints too.
