How much is the maximum they can charge for partial retest? I will take my car elsewhere to fix, and return within 10 days.

I read somewhere it is half of what you pay for the MOT

If I pay for half price MOT £27, the maximum they can charge for retest fee is £13.50???

There is nothing laid down, they can charge what they like.
£27 is already half the "official" price of £54.85.
Ring and ask them what they charge.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

No, the maximum test fee is £54.85.
The maximum partial retest fee is £27.42.
They can charge any price they like below those. The retest does not have to be half of their full price. They could charge £27 for each, if they wished.
  • haven't paid the max test fee for many years as there seems to be a lot of 50% discounts around these days.  My last car MOT was £27.42 and re-test £14.75.

  • Disappointed that there is a unclear information from the government of what the garage can charge. Below is on the gov website. If they clearly state the maximum for MOT is £54.75, why not the partial test fee too?

Taking it back for a retest within 10 working days
You’ll only need a partial retest if you take the vehicle from the test centre for repairs and take it back within 10 working days. You can be charged a partial retest fee for this.

Interesting, I wonder if any garage use this tactics, effectively they are charging full price for MOT.

I think the information on the government web site is crystal clear.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.  If you aren't paying the £54 for an MOT (with free retest) then you are paying for it somewhere else.  I'm quite happy paying the government rate.  My only caveat being you need to trust your garage.

At 45min/MOT, £54/test with zero VAT is equivalent to £72/hr + vat labour rate.
Yes, there's a sizeable investment in the test lane, and test slots themselves cost money - albeit only a couple of quid - but, even so, that's still a lot higher than many places actually charge for labour.
