What is a CIFAS

I was just wondering how would someone get a CIFAS and would show on your public record or is it hidden?

It's a marker placed on a central database indicating one of a variety of misdemeanours, that, if you receive one of these, will severely hinder your chances of accessing financial products.  It's accessible to financial institutions but not generally published, but you can access your own info via a subject access request: https://www.cifas.org.uk/contact-us/subject-access-request

Usually from applying for lots of credit using false/inaccurate information for example. Have you been notified that you've been given a CIFAS marker after all of your recent credit card application activity?

I also received a letter from both Halifax and Lloyds that the credit card application was closing with intermediate effect and after further checks is that CIFAS?

Further checks doesn't necessarily mean there's any CIFAS record - a soft search only lets them see an overview of your credit file, a hard search gives them more detail. It might be that on the soft search things looked ok - but on the hard search they found something they didn't like. Nobody will know what that is though except the bank - and they won't tell you. If you do want to check CIFAS - you can do it here: https://www.cifas.org.uk/contact-us/subject-access-request
