MacBook Pro 2013 bricked from Big Sir update - what are my rights?

Hi there
i reluctantly updated my mbp 2013 to big sir and it’s caused my hard drive to fail (countless forums on web confirming this is caused by big sir and how it interacts with the logic board). Apple are saying it’ll cost me £500 to fix. Do I have any rights as the update caused the issue? Apple keep stating that consumer law only protects me for 6 years and I think it’s intentional that the issue is hitting laptops older than 6 years. Do I have a case?

Apple released an updated version of Big Sur (11.0.1) in November to address this issue:

If you get no joy with Apple, there is a well documented fix for it, costs a fraction of what Apple are charging:

£8 for the I/O board + buy some thermal paste: (this is just an example, check the right model for your exact MBP)

As a follow-up can I just reassert the general principal that to avoid future issues, don't automatically update mac software without waiting to see what problems have been observed/what software has stopped working for other people.
Really, don't be in a rush to upgrade. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
