Tax code is wrong, no help at HMRC

in Cutting tax
I was made redundant in September last year, I managed to get another job pretty much straight away.
My tax code had always been 1250L.
However now I been working for my new employer for nearly 6 months my tax code is still 912L M1.
I sent information through the HMRC gov website but it still hasn't changed back and they haven't said it's wrong, yet sent a letter to say next tax year code will be 1257L.
Am I going to get a refund, do I need to ring HMRC?
This is frustrating and so far they haven't been very helpful.

You haven't said why you believe the tax code to be wrong. If you walked out into another job straight away then it's possible the code is correct. Particularly if there was an overlap in pay periods. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

Just give them a call. My tax code was wrong earlier this year, but they changed it over the phone. They were pretty helpful and explained what had happened. If 912L is correct, then they will tell you why0

Perhaps you could tell us why you think the code is wrong?
Just because you have been on the standard emergency tax code in the past doesn't mean the new one is wrong.
When people change jobs it's not unusual to be paid twice in one tax period and if the 1250L code was used by both the old and new employer you could end up owing tax. That is what is likely to have happened.
Essentially you had two jobs at the same time and both used tax code 1250L. It's quite normal and highly likely to have been what has happened here.
Post some payslip info for the month you changed jobs and all should become clearer.
A breakdown of the 912L tax code would also be useful however I suspect it is simply personal allowance less a deduction to collect the tax you owe.0 -
M1 is an emergency tax code.
Did you receive a P45? Tax codes: Updating your tax code - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)0 -
1250L is the emergency tax code.
M1 simply means the code is being operated on a non cumulative basis. Which would be appropriate of the op had been paid by two employers in the same tax period.1 -
Sorry I'm not really up on all the different codes, but I have always been on the 1250L code and whilst I appreciate the change of code for a couple of months whilst any overlap of wages was sorted out I just thought by now I would have covered any amount of under paid tax.
Maybe not then judging by some of the comments.
