Always wanted one and they are for sale locally.
If I have to plant in the sun it will have to be in a pot maybe as there are drains very near. Can't find out their rooting habit.
Erica veitchii is the type.
What are my chances of success with a pot? There's a strong cool wind where I can put it in a sunny spot.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Are your drains so awful a heather would pose a risk? Modern plastic drains are pretty much impervious to things growing into them. It's only the old clay ones which can come apart at the joints and attract roots.
Not much experience with a Heather. One at primary school was good for a chocolate biscuit at break, and there was another, but she was out of my class in more ways than one!

Perhaps should've tried Daisy or Primroses? :)

Make sure you get eh alpine one , which grows to 6ft. as others grow to large trees.
Wind should not be a problem and they grow in sun or shade.
if in a pot it would have to be heavy to avoid being blown over.

Thanks Sherambler. My prefered spot is partial shade, sunny in the morning and shady in the hot afternoon (well hot hopefully) but it's not a dark area.
Just read they must have sun and the one I admired in my neighbours was in bone dry north facing.
Good point about the pot. And I'll double check the variety for size. Though I quite fancy a full size heather tree but not this time
