First or second generation smart meters.

Forgive me if this Q. has been asked but how can I ensure that I'm getting a second generation smart meter? I have heard that first generation meters with added software are being given to unsuspecting customers although this shouldn't be happening. Are there specific dates on these generators or numbers that will indicate which generation they belong to?.
Many thanks,
jameslf

SMETS1 meters no longer count towards the rollout target so suppliers, who face fines if targets are not met, will fit SMETS2 meters. That said, I do believe that in situations where SMETS2 meters will not work, some suppliers have offered a SMETS1 meter if a consumer wants to access to a particular tariff; eg, a tariff for EVs. I understand that they may be fined for doing so as these installations have to be reported to Ofgem. One supplier is currently under an Ofgem threat of a ‘no new customers ban’ for refusing to fit SMETS2 meters.

From the Ofgem policy letter to all suppliers:

Quote: In the meantime, we acknowledge that there will be a few instances where suppliers or their representatives (including network companies in the case of an emergency metering situation) may not be able to install a SMETS2 meter. In such situations, Ofgem expects suppliers to be able to provide evidence to Ofgem that they have taken all reasonable steps to install a SMETS2 meter and why they judged it to be in the best interest of the customer to proceed with a traditional, SMETS1 or Advanced meter install. Thanks for the detailed reply. Shortly after I left the post I went online and found a very good article by OVO which says the rollout of SMETS2 meters began in 2018. Apparently if the serial number starts with 19P it's a SMETS1 meter and if it's 19M it's a SMETS2 meter. The problems you mentioned and the Ofgem policy letter were outlined as well. .I'm trying to get my energy provider to tell me which meter they are hoping to install.
    Thanks again for your advice,

  • The serial numbers quoted may be for a particular make/model of meter: I am guessing L&G. My electricity meter serial number starts with 20J and the meter type is a Kaifa M120. I have had SMETS2 meters since July 2019. Which supplier are you with?
