Do I need different hinges for oak internal doors?

been looking at oak internal doors from Wickes, it says they are 27kg in weight.  A colleague said I’d need different hinges for them, due to the weight of the door - anyone else know of this please?

  • If you are spending lots of money on oak doors of that weight you really need to buy good quality stainless steel hinges.
75mm hinges would be the ones to go for.

  • Also  put 3 hinges per door

There is no need for three hinges. I've had two glazed oak doors (even heavier) hanging from good quality 3" SS hinges for 10 years with absolutely no problem whatever

We had Oak veneer doors installed fairly recently. They came from B&Q. We were recommended 3 hinges as the solid frame part around the door was quite thin compared to the weight. Our wardrobe cupboard doors came from somewhere else (Tood doors maybe) they were much more solid and our installer said even though they were heavier we could have got away with 2 hinges. In the end we did 3 hinges to match the other doors.
So you may want to check the construction of the door before going one way or the other.
  • I put up 7 oak veneer doors in my house from B&Q. I used 3 hinges on each door ( I think they advised 3 in the instructions) And just normal 3" (75mm) hinges with removeable pins makes it easier when fitting & when I have 2 put on another varnish  coating. Been up 2 years now problems.

Thanks all, general concencus seems to be 3 x 75mm hinges, so will go with that when we choose door furniture.
    Thanks again everyone
  • Hinges should say on them what weight they are recommended for. If you chose the right ones a pair is fine. If you chose ones rated for less than the weight of the door you'll probably need a pair and a half (i.e. 3)

I put some solid oak doors (I think also about 27kg) with these:
