Plant Support Prices

I have some Gladioli ready to go in shortly, last year they did really well. Only trouble was during some bad weather they tended to bend badly and drooped. I was looking for some supports but crikey they're expensive to buy from Garden Centres/online. I saw a programme last year where rebar was used, are there any alternatives someone can offer?

  • Got any hazel prunings? The Botanic Garden here makes their own rustic supports in a variety of shapes and sizes from these and they both look attractive and do a good job.

I've used heavy duty green wire to make a circle or half circle, then the same as 'legs' bent round at the top to fit the circles to support plants. I too looked at the prices and thought too much then what to do with them for the rest of the year
It was easy to store because they come apart or fold and doesn't show against the plants.

If buying/doing online searches, there are reasonably priced suppliers out there.
About 8 years ago (edit:  fool, no, it has to have been 15 years)  i bought quite a lot, plastic covered wire ones in various shapes and sizes - still going strong today with not a sign of wear on any of them.
Absolutely no idea which places i used but they were definitely excellent value for money.

As and when gardening shows start again (Spring & Autumn Malvern eg.) you get stall holders selling them there, better prices again as they're pleased to shift the stock on the day.

The Range used to sell some too.
