Odd how you put the important part in brackets.  Diesels are generally more expensive to buy, to service and to maintain and don't like short journeys.  I'd steer away from diesel and look at petrol.
I really don't think that's the case for a older (banger) car. I certainly haven't seen any difference in the service costs of a petrol and diesel car. They may be more expensive new but it don't think that extends to a 15 year old car
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • Dont buy a diesel ever....
Speaking after paying £560 for 1 injector, £1200 for a DPF and a service every 10,000 miles

Now we all know how it felt to play in the band on the Titanic...

My current car has died, at present I'm working from home and getting online food shopping. I hadn't driven my old car for 6 weeks and in the last 7 months since it had it's MOT I've done 600 miles. When I did use the car regularly 99% of my journeys were under 5 miles.
Hmm, might not be the case, but do you need a car at all? Under 5m is a walking/cycling distance so I'd opt for a utilitarian bicycle with a luggage rack to carry stuff (or e-bike)
Technically I don't need a car... but I'm a lazy toad so want one!

Buy a big V8 petrol yank tank or 4x4

    Petrol engines have injectors too.
The discussions on this thread relate to old diesels without DPFs
Plenty of petrol cars have service intervals of 10,000 miles and plenty of diesels have longer service intervals.

They do - but they're very different to those on common-rail diesels. FAR lower pressure.

The OP does not need to worry about any of this.  The OP wants something for £1k to last 1k miles and 1 year.  Pretty much anything with a 12-month MOT will do the job and keep limping along irrespective of how much abuse the car gets - certainly no point in paying to service it given the limited requirements.

I am inclined to agree with this:
Buy a big V8 petrol yank tank or 4x4
    Or, go for a toy:
