Would it be a terrible idea to buy a (diesel) banger for low mileage journeys?

I really don't think that's the case for a older (banger) car. I certainly haven't seen any difference in the service costs of a petrol and diesel car. They may be more expensive new but it don't think that extends to a 15 year old carSupersonos said:
Odd how you put the important part in brackets. Diesels are generally more expensive to buy, to service and to maintain and don't like short journeys. I'd steer away from diesel and look at petrol.Working_in_pyjamas said:Would it be a terrible idea to buy a (diesel) banger for low mileage journeys?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.1 -
Dont buy a diesel ever....

Hmm, might not be the case, but do you need a car at all? I hadn't driven my old car for 6 weeks and in the last 7 months since it had it's MOT I've done 600 miles. When I did use the car regularly 99% of my journeys were under 5 miles.

Petrol engines have injectors too.maxmycardagain said:Dont buy a diesel ever....

The discussions on this thread relate to old diesels without DPFs
Plenty of petrol cars have service intervals of 10,000 miles and plenty of diesels have longer service intervals.2 -
They do - but they're very different to those on common-rail diesels. FAR lower pressure.NaughtiusMaximus said:Petrol engines have injectors too.1 -
The OP does not need to worry about any of this. The OP wants something for £1k to last 1k miles and 1 year. Pretty much anything with a 12-month MOT will do the job and keep limping along irrespective of how much abuse the car gets - certainly no point in paying to service it given the limited requirements.maxmycardagain said:Dont buy a diesel ever....

I am inclined to agree with this:
Or, go for a toy:maxmycardagain said:Buy a big V8 petrol yank tank or 4x4
