Pig headedness doesnt work in anyone's favour.

You want the matter closed and dont want them hassling you any more and so there's your motivation to play nice

They want to ensure they recover the money so they earn their commission/profit and so there's their motivation.

The payment is in the system and should go through in a day or so... its up to you if you want to be proactive or responsive.. if you both choose responsive then it should resolve before the end of the week.
  • As ever I am indebted to the hive mind that is the MSE forum, and to everyone who has responded.
It was a final payment, and the transaction shows the name of the company.
Worth asking as some of the less scrupulous ones will sometimes claim a payment did not go through to get a double payment when there are ongoing payments due.
Just a final question - should it be contingent on me to contact the debt collector, or contingent on them to contact me.
They stonewalled me on them contacting me and insisted I would have to contact them (despite the fact they have no email address and their phone line costs money).
It would be in your interest to do so, yes you can choose to wait it out, but you might as well just give them a call, tell them that the bank has confirmed the payment has left your account and went through and that your bank have confirmed it is now down to their card processing agreement as to when the money reaches their bank account from the processing provider. Out of interest why would calling them cost you money, are they using a premium rate number?
  • Not a premium rate as such, but one that seems to attract a cost via a mobile carrier (they state it will be charged outside inclusive minutes). That irked me, rather.

As you are the party making the payment you need to first confirm with your bank that they have not held the payment for any particular reason, the onus is on you to do that. Also note that the money has not been "sent" anywhere, you paid on a debit card, that involves a request for transfer of funds, which is then approved by the bank, but can also be held up or suspended for various (usually anti-fraud) reasons, money can also be authorised, appear as pending, but the final transaction might not complete. It is also in your interest to get the matter resolved, so a short call to your bank would not be regarded as unreasonable.

Bank would not hold a debit card payment.
It's either approved or declined. There are no other options. If it came up for a security check, then retailer gets a declined message.
If debt co said it was processed (they would get the approval/decline message on their system) Then it has gone through.

Odds on co is trying to pull a fast one and get a double payment.

Op can ring bank just to get them to confirm payment has been approved. That will not take long.
    Life in the slow lane
  • Debt collectors often say ‘they’ll send round bailiffs’. It’s just meant to scare you. It needs to go to court before they can enforce a debt. If they money has gone then just ignore them for a few days and wait for them to realise they’ve been paid

  • Thanks for everyones input, it was much appreciated.
