Overlap of tenancy and purchase

We are hopefully nearing exchange to buy a property and we are in rented at the moment. We don't intend giving in our notice until at least exchange - so this gives us a few weeks where we will have both properties. They're only a mile apart. Can anyone advise as to what we need to do re insurance / council tax etc?

Insurance - insure the new property from exchange. Buildings plus contents if you have any there. Bear in mind any terms about leaving the property unoccupied if you won't be there from day one, but if it's under a month you should be fine. Old property - maintain your insurance, presumably just for contents and perhaps accidental damage, and cancel when you know your leaving date.
Council tax - check with your local authority website to see if you get a discount on a temporarily unoccupied property. But you'll have to be registered for both addresses and pay from the time of completion (in the new address) and until the ending of occupation (in the old address).
Don't forget utility readings.
Having the crossover may cost a bit but will take a huge amount of hassle out of the process, and is best practice in case something goes wrong with exchange or completion.4 -
Thank you - it really reduces the stress of moving day! In fact I don't think we will even need to hire a removal van as lots of our stuff is old enough to be recycled/given away and we can hire a 'man and a van' instead.0
