Hi there danaflett30, your hot water cylinder should ideally have two immersion heating elements, one at the bottom timed by THTC and one at the top with a 'Horstmann Boost Control Timer' (or similar) which is left on 'Timed' until you turn the selector for up to 2 hrs boost of the top element. The boost should also be wired into the THTC system as that cheaper rate is applicable to ALL heating appliances 24/7 unlike E7/10 tariffs, that is the point of being on a THTC tariff in the first place. Unfortunately the benefits of the tariff are not widely understood by some electrical contractors that may have subsequently wired in heating appliances to the standard tariff meter. If your hot water cylinder only appears to have a top element (as my small original cylinder did) then it is likely that there are still two elements inside, but one is much deeper than the other for the THTC timed signal wiring.0
