I had a full hip operation 3 years ago and went private through my works private health scheme, so was in a position to pick my consultant.

When I first went to my doctors, I did ask him if I could choose this particular consultant through the NHS, my doctor said no, but I’m sure I read or heard that you could choose going through the NHS.

Anybody know or even done it.

You do not have a legal entitlement to choose your consultant.

A clinical team can consist of a number of doctors and consultants. 
My Urology clinical team consists of 3 consultants (as well as other staff such as oncologist, CNS and other specialist staff) and I see each of them at some point.

on the NHS you will see the consultant or one of their team. In Ophthalmology you may or may not see the consultant for example a catarct op. You are more likely to see a junior if you are straightforward. If you go to an outreach clinic or small hospital you are more likely to see a consultant due to the size of the clinic tream!
