One of the issues is that a lot of the plants have to be sold within a certain time or they are wasted.gingerdad said:sammyjammy said:I'll never understand why garden centres are open, its just another excuse for people to be able to leave the house unnecessarily.
totally agree we own a gift shop which except for plants sells all the same things as the garden centre but we can't open0 -

Food shops are essential and most of them will sell alcohol.

I don’t think they’re allowed to sell the ‘sundries’ like gifts, cards, home stuff etc at the moment, just the gardening stuff and animal/pet supplies.gingerdad said:sammyjammy said:I'll never understand why garden centres are open, its just another excuse for people to be able to leave the house unnecessarily.

I meant pubs and restaurants who have had to throw away large quantities of food and beer as they had to be used within a certain time, that was a massive waste.poppy12345 said:gizmo111 said:

The local pubs were selling off pints for 90p just before lockdown, some pubs have adapted for takeaway and others donated to local charities and food banks. We had a local initiative for a soup kitchen last year and all food was donated by local businesses and soups dishes out to locals.gizmo111 said:

I think it was the boss of LEON last year that donated huge amounts of food to food banks, so not all was wastedMake £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

"Guidance on mixed retailA business selling a significant amount of essential retail may also continue to sell goods typically sold at non-essential retail. For example, a supermarket that sells food is not required to close off or cordon off aisles selling homeware."

If its an actual concession, ie a separate business operating within the garden centre, or its separate to the main shop (eg the entirety of the 1st floor or a 2nd building connected by a covered walkway) then it has to close. If its part of the GC then it can stay openwannabe_a_saver said:
