Limavady has been a quiet area and leaves you close the seaside in portrush/portstewart area. and 20 mins drive of both londonderry and Coleraine. and a mere 70 mins to Belfast.
  • sorry ive not been able to get back to this for a while. Thanks very much for all the input it gives me alot to go by.
we have relatives in coleraine so i was looking around there about 5-10 miles around and we have 3 kids so was hoping for 3-4 bed house and hopefully somewhere nice and quiet but i did see some large homes with crazy low prices compared to here in manchester but they was very far out it seamed like 1 i was looking at in Garvagh i think it was called. and some close to the coast north of coleraine.

Avoid Garvagh. There's a reason the houses are cheap there.

Coleraine is on the North Coast so anywhere around Coleraine/Portrush/Portstewart is where you want to be. However, expect a lot of competition for housing - it's a popular place.

Coleraine/Portrush/Portstewart were always popular, dear for a reason though.

I have family round the Limavady area. I'd love to live there but I think it's more of a dream than a reality tbh. The last time I was home (a couple of years ago) the changes surprised me. The road signs and street signs there are in Gaelic and English, but Gaelic first.

One day me and my aunt went for a day in Londonderry on the bus, and I said I'd buy the tickets. The bus driver seemingly couldn't understand me (I've lost my accent, I sound like a Yorkshire lass now). He just kept repeating "ya wha'?" "ya wha'?" whenever I spoke. We got off the bus to wait for the next one, and as the doors closed the driver laughed. There's a lot of anti-English sentiment in certain areas, and not just in the 'Catholic areas'.

Whereabouts are your family? How have they found it? Perhaps stay with them/near them til you find your feet a bit?

I’d recommend Hillsborough. Scenic, reasonably quiet, central and easy access to the city down the dual carriageway. It’s not cheap though.

Search it in conjuction with Google maps (or similar). That will give you a better idea of local geography in relation to the rest of the country.

  • i was looking a few in Portrush but right near the sea, is it too touristy as it just looks so busy with so many shops and hotels? but the sea area looks awesome :)

Portrush is very dear as it's a real tourist spot, the North Coast goes mad on a nice day. It is a lovely area though, I spent a lot of time there and in Coleraine growing up. The town centres aren't quite what they used to be mind you.

During May a lot of the area is closed off due to the North West (if it ever gets running again after covid) being held. So you've a few practice days and a full Saturday of racing.

You need to think about what schools you want your children to go to, how close to supermarkets, doctors, no entertainment etc you want to live and plan from there.

do you want to live in a rural area, or in a town?

    What is your budget?

Will you be travelling back to England a lot, do you want to be close to an airport?

Where will you work?  What kind of commute are you willing to make

In the summer months and at the first appearance of the sun over Easter, Portrush/Portstewart are jammed packed with tourists.

However, you will get relative peace and tranquility the rest of the year. Portrush in particular becomes a bit of a ghost town.

Another thing to consider is that Portrush is due to host the open I think two more times in the near future. If you've got a house near it and are willing to part with it for a few weeks over that period, you can make obscene amounts of money from the rich and famous renting out the properties via AirBNB and the like.
