Company requesting proof of postage?

I recently noticed after around 3 weeks after returning an item (via royal mail) that I hadn't heard from the company. (shoe company, UK) I reached out and they replied asking to see proof of postage. Am I wrong to assume they need to confirm they have not received the item first? As if I say I’ve lost my proof of postage (I have unfortunately) they could easily lie and say they haven't received them. I have asked for them to confirm they haven't received, and they asked again to see proof ‘so they could confirm from their side’. Seems a bit fishy? I will take the hit if the parcel is lost as I have no proof of postage, just seems strange they can’t say ‘no we haven’t received them.’

  • The proof of postage is the key item as it shows the date you returned.  Do you have a proof of delivery instead?
  • I have nothing, which is totally my fault. I’m terrible at keeping receipts etc. and I’ve never had problems (lesson learned). I know I returned around the last week of January. I just find it strange how I reached out to ask if they had it, the first thing they asked is I have proof of postage. They either have it, or they dont.
  • Basically I want to know if i’m in the wrong for asking them to confirm they haven't received the item before i admit i’ve lost proof of postage haha. I don't want to throw myself under the bus when they’re acting strange about it!

Assuming change of mind, the regs advise:

    www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2013/3134/regulation/34/made

    (4) Reimbursement must be without undue delay, and in any event not later than the time specified in paragraph (5) or (6).

    (5) If the contract is a sales contract and the trader has not offered to collect the goods, the time is the end of 14 days after—

(a)the day on which the trader receives the goods back, or

(b)if earlier, the day on which the consumer supplies evidence of having sent the goods back.

They may very well have received the item - but for whatever reason weren't able to attribute it to you when they opened the box. Did you put all your relevant paperwork inside when you returned it? A copy of the invoice or returns note?

You've obviously lost it as you say - so that can't be helped now - so your only option really is to hold your hands up, apologise for mislaying it, and ask them very nicely to process it for you anyway. (No point going all shouty with them - that won't get you anywhere).

Is there a chance you can find the paperwork?  Checked all your bags? Coat pockets? Car door pockets? Bedside drawers? Wastepaper bins? It might be worth a sweep through all the obvious places just on the offchance you stuffed it on the side somewhere.
  • Thanks for your responses. Unfortunately definitely not got it, I’ve recently moved house so theres been a lot of moving furniture around, decluttering etc. They've since replied confirming they haven’t got it, so I’ve explained I don't have the proof and will see what they say. Bummer!
