    I said "can", and it does seem there is discretion. In my case I had over the savings limit due to the sale of a caravan which had never been my permanent home, but I was allowed to have it disregarded as I was about to buy a home to live in. YMMV depending on the benefits concerned and the mood of the assessing officer, I suppose.

    And yes. You say that it depends which part of the country OP lives in. Exactly what I said, in that it's plenty of money unless you are choosy on location. So thank you for agreeing with me? Obviously if you want to live in London you'll be out of luck. Depends on your priorities obviously.

    The OP also has to think of the future if they decide to buy their own home, can they afford to pay for any repairs in the future? It's not just about buying a house, it's the upkeep as well. Lots to think about here.

    That’s an interesting experience regarding the disregard. (What’s YMMV?)
