Is there any way of logging into either of Virgin Money Savings or Coventry Building Society without requiring a text or phone confirmation?

I have savings and current accounts with several other banks and financial organisations but all these can be accessed without a 2FA confirmation.

I recognise that some of these do have 2FA by virtue of a token or similar on my devices but I can still log on without inputting one every time.

  • I have both of the above and, having just taken a look myself, cannot find a way to log in without using either the Virgin Money app, or a phone call from Cov BS.

    Sorry.

    Thanks.

How does the Virgin Money app help to log into the Virgin Money Savings website? As far as I can see, there is no link whatsoever between VM Savings and the VM current account (which is the only one with an app).

2FA is becoming a mandatory requirement in a range of payment services from 14th Sept 2021.   So, expect to see it added more.  Even in areas where it not mandated, you will likely see it appearing.

    Thank you.

Will this include apps, or will 2FA requirements continue to be satisfied by biometrics and/or digital secure keys.

I have just realised that the problem with Virgin Money Savings and Coventry BS is that they do not have apps which would, in effect, bypass overt 2FA confirmations.

It doesn't. Other than providing a link to uk.virginmoney.com somewhere in the 'products' section, though you might not consider this as 'help' (I don't).

Virgin Money have a who host of disjointed systems for their different products. Only some of them have an app. The only savings you can get to via an app is the savings account linked to their main current account. Other savings accounts (regular savers, ISAs, other) can only be accessed via online banking or, in some cases, Branch. The disparate systems also have different login credentials.

The method is not mandated.    Some will be TOTP, text message or email or their own app.

I prefer TOTP so I can use an app like Authy as the authenticator. I don't like filling my phone with rarely used apps dedicated to one provider. e.g M&S bank that makes you use their app.

    Many thanks.

In addition, the exclusive 1 year fixed ISA 1% (now withdrawn) is only visible on the app. I would imagine that the current 0.50% easy access exclusive cash ISA would also only be on the app.

Thanks. I would prefer app based to TOTP text or email.

I have also seen some discussion on whether SCA is synonymous with 2FA. I guess the blog on the link below is not the only example and this may already be on @eskbankers thread. I will need to revisit that to see what was said on this site.

It's technically true that SCA and 2FA aren't strictly synonymous but my understanding is that from a consumer perspective, 2FA is the visible manifestation of SCA, even though there are other aspects in the background.

CBS access and authentication approach is archaic and neither of them have apps yet for savers, for that reason I wont use them anymore. With rates so low , standard MFA including face recognition and open banking API is is a must
