Pre-Inspection 2nd hand car

Options
Just before I fork out £7K on a 5yr old 2nd hand car, is it worth having an AA/Rac vehicle inspection?
If so, is it a standard inspection, or do I have to be specific what I want inspected?

Where are you buying it from? Private or dealer? I'd make the decision based on that, large well known dealer probably means it's not needed, backstreet one that's not been trading long might be worth it.

Have you done all the basic checks yourself like MOT and vehicle history?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • I've done mot history. no failures / pre-advisory comments, independant dealer, 2016 plate, 37k miles, advert says, service history

The trouble with AA/RAC inspections is that you'd probably never by anything if you use them and each car you get inspected is more money gone. Once you've invested in an inspection, then you lose some bargaining power because you have already invested in the inspection so the dealer knows you are happy enough to proceed and that you won't want to waste the cost of the inspection. I've heard that there are enough ifs and maybes in the report to cover the AA or RAC in case of any problems. The only good that would come of it would be if they found something definitely wrong, either bad enough to have saved you wasting your money, or as something to be fixed before purchase, assuming the dealer agrees though a good dealer would resolve issues for you anyway, inspection or not.
  • Cheers for the info, given it's age 5yrs, yet only 37k miles, I'm hoping there's nothing seriously wrong with the vehicle, therefore, I'll save my money and not bother with an inspection.
