Utility insisting on getting my DOB

I recently moved into a house and setup my gas & electric submitting meter readings etc. but there is a laps between the date I moved in and the date they were notified by my current provider so they have billed the 'Owner/Occupier' for a period that I dont know the start or finnish or or, how many units have been consumed.
So I call the number to try and sort out the correct amount to pay (they tell me I should have notified them when I moved in...) but they want to create an account for me before they can do anything.
I'm not to keen to do this as I dont want to have this debt assigned to me but they say they cant do anything unless I create an account.
So I give them my name, confirm the address, even give them my phone number (they did a call back so have it anyway) but when they asked for my DOB, I refused.
They say that without my DOB, they cannot create the account and without an account, they cant do anything for me.
So to my question, do I have to give my DOB?

I guess they need to be sure that you are 18+, otherwise any contract would be unenforceable.0

What is it you want them to do for you? Surely it's them who want to send you a bill?downhillhotrod said:They say that without my DOB, they cannot create the account and without an account, they cant do anything for me.0 -
