See if there's updated drivers for the sons PC Wifi adapter or updated firmware for the wifi router.

You could try disabling IPv6 on the Wifi connection on the PC as this seems to be where a lot of the trouble is stemming from.

    OK, quick lesson.

IPv4 is the current way of assigning individial computers addresses on a network, i.e 192.168.0.1 BUT the amount of free unique addresses available on the internet is due to run out by 2010 so IPv6 was introduced which adds billions more.

Now Vista uses both but XP doesn't. A lot of older routers don't support both and get a bit confused by Vista requesting one.

Solution? Disable IPv6 as it's not needed on a LAN.

To do this, go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing. On the left, click "Manage network connections. Right click on the network connection in question and select "Properties". On the next screen (after the UAC prompt) you'll see all the protocols being used. Untick IPv6 and if you still have grief, untick the two Link Layer ones (they provide the ability to display the network graphically in Network and Sharing Center and to respond to things such as XBox 360's.)
