Immersion heaters are expensive to run! Do you have a boost button on it?
But not so expensive as to explain the OP's bills. We had to use the immersion heater recently when we had an issue with the central heating. Even with two of us having showers every day and doing some washing up by hand, it only increased usage by ~ 15kwh per day which cost us ~ £2 per day on our tariff.
