I'm so sorry, it's never easy losing a furball.
The questioning is normal, take comfort that you were able to help him and the time together has shown what unconditional love is.
For now let the tears flow, talk if you want, play music, watch TV or sit in silence. There's no right or wrong way, nor is healing a quick process and so don't try to rush it.
We are all here for you and sending virtual hugs.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.2 -
You made the right decision.
It was the best decision for him to end his suffering, but of course for us humans left behind it feels like the worst decision.3 -
Having to make that final decision is the cost of all the love you shared.
I know just what you are feeling now.. "did I do the right thing? Could I have done more?" Think of the wonderful life you gave your furball, give yourself time to grieve, and take comfort from the fact that you did do the right thing.2 -
If it should be
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain does keep me from my sleep.
Then will you do what must done
For this – the last battle – can’t be won.You will be sad I understand
But don’t let grief then stay your hand
For on this day, more than the rest
Your love and friendship must stand the test.We have had so many happy years
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so
When the time comes, please let me go.I know that in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me
Although my tail its last has wagged
From pain and suffering I have been saved.Don’t grieve that it must now be you
Who has to decide this thing to do
We’ve been so close – we two – these years
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.author unknown

I’m so sorry for your loss. All I can say is to echo what others have said - that’s just because you *can* do something doesn’t mean that you should.FWIW with my own pets I go for minimal intervention and would rather that they enjoyed life than have a bit longer filled with pain. My father was a vet and operated on a couple of our pets, knowing that it might be a case of not bringing them round if it was too bad. Finally, we’ve just inherited my Dad’s very elderly cat. She’s between 17 and 20, and is clearly not going to be far behind him, however we want to make sure that her final weeks/months are happy and filled with chicken.7

I'm so sorry for your loss. We all question the decision. You did the right thing for Bella.
I had to let my old girl go at the beginning of December - she had aggressive cancer in her leg, she had surgery at the end of May(she nearly bled to death as she caught the tumour and it didn't stop bleeding) which is when the vet said that it could be cancer. It came back just over 2 months after the surgery with secondary tumours elsewhere then it got too big and she bled it again which is when we had agreed to let her go as she got very depressed when it happened in the past.
The poem further up is perfect as I couldn't put into words how much it means as a pet owner.
