MSE Cat Grass?

(used to post reasonably often until a couple of years ago - came back, everything's changed, I can't login and I can't access the email linked to my old account - ok, fresh start then!)
So, looking for an MSE way to grow cat grass for my inside cat... I have a couple of the Catit Senses garden thingies in rotation - I obviously buy vermiculite and seeds separately rather than using the rip-off branded refils - but it still adds up and it's really wasteful as I have to just throw it out every couple of weeks! Has anyone found a better way of doing this please?

After using the catit one for a while, I bought the seeds from here. https://mycatgrass.co.uk/ I grew them in regular compost, and I was impressed how long the grass looked good and lived for.My cats are allowed outside, so I’ve dedicated a trough for them, but over the winter I bought some ready-grown to keep indoors and was suitably impressed.1

I just grow it in compost - I have some pots in a bigger trough with stones surrounding them so it's harder for the cats to make a mess. I've only had a test batch of one pot, (which they totally destroyed very quickly, hence coming up with the stones idea!) then a second batch with three pots that are still going strong a month later when I've barely even remembered to water them.
I had a look on the site above and it seems expensive - my £2.50 pack of seeds is still half full, paying a tenner a month is a bit much!1 -
Thanks both - I tried using pots and regular compost a few years ago and it got infested with tiny flies - that's when I started using the catit
Sounds like I need to have another go!
