clearing up my credit file

I recently started looking into my credit score and discovered an incorrect entry. To cut a very long story short I have now received confirmation from Virgin that the missing payments that have been recorded for the past 2 years are incorrect and my credit file will be adjusted but the end of this month. My question is will this have a long term effect on my credit score or will the correction erase that data as if it never happened?

The score will continue to drop with the changes but once the data is gone, no one will see it or know it was there.2
