Selecting a billing date

I'm looking to do a balance transfer to a new card (not yet applied) and want to apply so the billing date falls in the first week of the month. I already have a few cards that have fixed dates for DDs.
Is there a rule of thumb for timing this?

  • Just ask them for that date, so long as they can get the payment monthly it's flexible with the cards I have had

Each lender is going to take a different amount of time to setup the account. Ask them to recommend a date to apply or if you can ask for the DD to be taken on a specific date.
I moved all my credit card DD to the 1st of the month, the only annoying thing is if you move it then they will skip taking a DD for that month (they tend to have limits on how often you can change it to avoid letting people push the payments into the future repeatedly).

You can ask the card provider to move the statement date. We do it, so others should be able too.

As others have said, you can just contact the provider and ask them to change the statement date if you don't like the one you're given. I do this whenever I get a new card, and have never had any problem. Over the years, MBNA, Halifax, John Lewis, NewDay, Nationwide, TSB, Santander, Nationwide and American Express have all done it for me. There might be others that I've forgotten. I've never had a refusal.
