If there's a recommendation you have, I'm interested. I have a budget of £500-700. Preferably the lower end
It's not a contest. The OP needs our recommendations. I just pointed out that humanracer's recommendations outperform the older devices in the OP post.
If anyone has anything even better, I'm sure the OP would be interested to know. For my part, I wanted to let the OP know that the new suggestions were better than at what they looked. You didn't highlight the final two sentences, so I'll do it for you.leapyear said:If there's a recommendation you have, I'm interested. humanracer has posted some more sensible options. Ryzen 5 4500U outperforms Intel 1035G1, plus it does have an IPS screen. The HP doesn't really have a look-in.
humanracer posted better laptops for the same money.. The OP needs to understand that.
It's not about ego here. Just do your best.I have already helped the OP to the best of my ability by highlighting what you might call the best of a bad bunch. There are plenty of other users who can recommend better laptops if they wish.Nothing posted by the OP tells me they demand bleeding edge technology, including IPS displays or last week's CPU. If the OP can save money by buying last year's technology which will do exactly what the CPU needs, I don't see the harm or problem. This is also in keeping with this forum's rules and character. The purpose of this site is to help people save money, so please keep MoneySaving discussions on topic. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5029976 HP £530

Are you suggesting that the OP purchase the inferior product in order to save £19?
I think a superior monitor, 256 GB more solid state storage space, a superior processor, WiFi 6/Bluetooth 5.0 and a backlit keyboard are worth £19 extra. What do you think?
North Americans might call it a "no brainer".
Do you think that it is the moneysaving ethic to not spend the £19 for a far superior laptop?
If the OP simply wants to save money; they could buy a DELL for £100 less than the HP: https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dell-inspiron-156-fhd-wva-ryzen-5-3450u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-blackgreen-laptop-ps43912-at-dell-with-code-3673933 Even the DELL has an IPS screen.
There is nothing moneysaving about that HP. You only concentrated on a single aspect and that was it's processor.
Don't you want the OP to get the best possible value for their money?

So your argument is that the OP should purchase the HP over the ASUS in so that they can save £19?
I already pointed to a laptop way under the OP's budget, that is on a par or even better than the more expensive laptops in the OP high street list.
So the OP has much better choices than the HP. They can pay £100 less or perhaps £19 more. They have the choice; we just give them the information.
Your post didn't really highlight any alternatives; humanracer's did. I pointed that out for the benefit of the OP.0 -

The motoring forum used to be the place to go to read all the testosterone fueled posts full of people arguing about how they know best and constantly trying to appear superior to everyone else but these sorts of posts are getting more and more common on the tech forum now with constant arguments and sniping.

I found the info from heretoday and humanracer on laptop options exceptional ..all very very good.
Wish I had 500 odd going spare as its "very hard" to get all the features you prefer in one package at certain lower pricepoints around 400-550
Laptop prices are higher now via covid as well imo and they are depreciating items
I think some keyboard kid getting all butthurt and bit chy isnt really a issue its just noise or water under the bridge ...no one cares less .....they just want a £400-550 laptop deal with lots of bells an whistles

The issue was your reaction to that. I am not going to repost what you wrote, at it will only serve to inflame your passions further.
So why don't we leave it at that?. We both had good intentions. Let's not spoil it.0 -
Hello all! I haven't been here for a while because I had my operation (I'm so grateful to the NHS). Recovery has been difficult. As a get well present, my brother has offered £500 to put towards a new laptop. So my new budget is £1000. I'm now off to look at what I can get for that price. Thank you all!0
