Credit under DRO

Can anyone tell me is there anything stopping me taking out a new mobile phone contract if I have gone through a Debt relief order as my credit file is letting me?

  • Under a DRO you can't take out credit for more than £500 without letting the provider know you're in a DRO
Is the contract for a phone or just sim only? Is it with your existing provider or a new provider, if it's existing then most don't credit check existing customers as it's based on payment history, but if there's a credit check involved then it's likely you'll be turned down as your credit file will show the insolvency.

Also if taking out a new contract, you'd need to contact the Insolvency service and complete a new income and expediture form to assess whether the contract takes you over your £50 surplus or not

I had a DRO and was able to upgrade my existing contract as the payments were the same and there was no credit check, could this be an option? Failing that, how about buying a pay as you go phone and using a sim only plan
  • My credit check passed on the mobile phone contract the contract is for a new handset and sim plan but same provider

If you're out of the moratorium  you can do what you want
  • @fatbelly how long does the moratorium last? I know I entered the DRO over a year ago now if that makes any difference I don't know

    One year exactly.

Check your entry on the insolvency register

Could it be that your DRO was more than 15 months ago?

The moratorium lasts 12 months and the DRO stays on the register a further three.

Your credit report shows the DRO date for 6 years.

  • @fatbelly that probably is the case if I'm honest I need to check on date I entered DRO it has probably been that length of time now
